Readers’ forum: Scottish subcontractor

What expenses are claimable by a Scottish subcontractor working in London?

We have been approached by a client who is self-employed. His wife and family are based in Scotland.

During the past few years he has been working in London for the same contractor. He submits his own tax return but he has asked us to review his expenses which at first sight are significant. Can readers advise whether he can claim all of his rent rates gas and electric bills as well as his travel train fares around London which are all work-related? Further given that the cost of living is higher in London can he claim additional relief for food?

He does not travel home each weekend and often stays in London because he may work during the weekends as well.

I look forward to readers’ thoughts on the allowable amounts.
