Human aspect of office closures.

The implications of HMRC’s announcement that it will close most of its offices and concentrate work in only 13 centres will take some time to sink in. We will be keeping a close eye on how this works out in the months and years ahead. But I want to say something now about the individuals affected.

The decision will have a direct impact on many members of HMRC’s staff who must be worrying about whether they will still have a job and if they do where it is they will be working. Many families will be facing an uncertain future.

HMRC as an organisation is criticised often rightly for poor performance but it is my experience that the staff as individuals do have a strong public service ethos and act with integrity and a desire to do the right thing.
