  • Even though HMRC have decided to scrap their business records checks programme it remains important to impress on clients to maintain full and accurate business records to assist in completing self-assessment tax returns and accounts

 

  • Termination payments are fraught with traps anddifficulties. Do not let the client assume that the first £30 000 is exempt – always check the relevant contracts and agreements first

 

  • Tax practitioners who have complained to HMRC on behalf of a client and have exhausted the department’s internal complaints process should consider proceeding to the adjudicator. The adviser can claim redress for distress and the cost of time incurred on the client’s behalf
