Claiming the marriage allowance takes a lot of effort

KEY POINTS

  • The marriage allowance came into force on 6 April 2015.
  • Up to 10% of a spouse’s or civil partner’s unused personal allowance can be transferred.
  • Individuals must register an intention to claim on GOV.UK.
  • Agents are not allowed to claim on behalf of clients.

Cast your mind back before the general election in 2010. Opposition leader David Cameron has set out his party’s manifesto pledges including a new relief to “bolster marriage” and “end the couple penalty for all couples”.

Fast forward five years and prime minister David Cameron’s new relief is now in force with an estimated four million married couples and 15 000 civil partners eligible.

The marriage allowance which came into force on 6 April 2015 has added to the complexity of the legislation...
