Phishing

HMRC were alerted to 24,839 phishing emails during last year’s tax credits renewal period of April to July, with 11,219 scams reported in May, a 131 % rise on the same month last year. The Revenue closed down 1,740 illegal sites in 2013.

Child benefit

Statutory instrument SI 2014/1511 and explanatory memorandum “The Child Benefit (General) and the Tax Credits (Residence) (Amendment) Regulations 2014” introduce, with effect from 1 July 2014, a three month residence qualification to be satisfied by people who have recently arrived in the UK before they are able to access child benefit or child tax credits.

Pensions

HMRC have published the minutes from the 17 April meeting of the pensions industry stakeholder forum.
