ATT wants 19 May cut-off for payroll submissions
The Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) urged HMRC to extend the deadline for end-of-year payroll submissions through the real-time information (RTI) system.
The call for a 19 May cut-off follows disruption to the government gateway earlier this month, as referred to by the Revenue:
“We are aware there have been service issues since mid-afternoon Friday 11 April, and apologise if you have experienced problems while trying to submit returns to us. We’ve been working to put things right and we now believe the issue has been resolved. However, there is a backlog of reply messages for submissions made between Friday and Sunday 13 April. We are working to clear the backlog and expect to have done that within 24 hours.”
The ATT expressed concern that the service problems caused difficulties for many employers and agents who submitted returns before the Easter weekend.
President Natalie Miller said, “The new system was always going to be vulnerable to any issues arising with the gateway in this short time period. This has always been a concern of the association. These disruptions will have caused considerable stress for those involved.”
The ATT is requesting a permanent move of the deadline to 19 May because the organisation believes there is no guarantee the RTI service failures will not recur.
Employers can adjust a previous year’s final payment submission on an earlier year update by 19 May.
