THE WRITER RECENTLY participated in a joint seminar involving officers from the former Inland Revenue side of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and members of the accountancy profession. The half-day event considered how both sides might 'work together' in connection with taxpayer meetings held during a full enquiry.

THE WRITER RECENTLY participated in a joint seminar involving officers from the former Inland Revenue side of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and members of the accountancy profession. The half-day event considered how both sides might 'work together' in connection with taxpayer meetings held during a full enquiry.
Some 33 professional advisers and 22 Officers attended the session. The participants were placed on 'mixed' tables and encouraged to discuss best practice and own experiences all prompted by a series of role plays involving some unexpectedly talented 'actors' from both groups. Two facilitators led the event again one from each side.
It soon became apparent that it is not just taxpayers who may want to stay clear of a meeting during an enquiry. Sometimes...
