The scope and operation of the listed places of worship grant scheme have been revamped, enabling a wider range of locations to be eligible.
The revisions make suitable works to pipe organs, turret clocks, bells and bell ropes. Professional services directly related to eligible building work, such as architect fees, are also now entitled to enter into the grant scheme.

Applications to make use of the system will be accepted from religious or charitable groups whose principal or primary purpose is to conserve, repair and maintain redundant listed places of worship that are not in private ownership.
The changes – which came in to effect on 1 October – are accompanied by administrative alterations to simplify claims. Each place of worship may submit one claim in any 12-month period, using eligible invoices with a value of less than £1,000 but more than £500 (excluding the VAT paid).
This is in addition to an unlimited number of claims in which the value of eligible work carried out is £1,000 or greater, excluding VAT.
Scanned or photocopied invoices will now be accepted to support claims, and the process payment runs each week in an effort to deliver a smoother flow of payments to applicants.
