Agent account strategy
HMRC have published a short update to their tax agent strategy programme, which will introduce some new online agent services by March 2015. The guide provides an overview of the new services and updates on their development, in particular:
- the online agent registration process – applying for a unique agent reference (UAR);
- applying for self-authorisation; and
- viewing payments and liabilities for clients.
Most wanted
HMRC have added ten faces to the gallery of their most wanted fugitives. They are being pursued for crimes including VAT fraud, evasion and money laundering, which have each cost the Exchequer between £100,000 and £10m. The Revenue has also launched an interactive map that shows the assumed whereabouts of the individuals.
VAT and storage
Revenue & Customs Brief 23/13 announces that VAT Information Sheet 10/13 updates the guidance on storage previously in Information Sheet 14/12.
Seizure
The taxman has published a revised version of Notice 12A: What you can do if things are seized by HMRC.
GAAR
HMRC have reminded agents that, although the general anti-abuse rule (GAAR) came into force on 17 July 2013, it does not mean the department will not use other methods to tackle avoidance.
Agent Update
Agent Update 37 has been published. It includes guidance on the 31 October self-assessment deadline, RTI, and other compliance matters.
Pensions
HMRC’s Pensions Newsletter 58 includes guidance on protecting the lifetime allowance at the 2013/14 level of £1.5m rather than having the £1.25m limit applying. HMRC also draw attention to the fact that, under FA 2013, taxpayers with overseas pension schemes now have until 5 April 2014 to apply for the 2012 £1.8m fixed protection limit to apply.
