Platform will follow progress of plan against evasion
The European Commission has set up a platform for good tax governance, as part of the ongoing drive against evasion and avoidance.
A cross-section of interested parties – including national tax authorities, businesses, academics, and non-governmental organisations – will monitor member states' progress in tackling aggressive tax planning and clamping down on tax havens.
The platform will comprise around 45 members who will follow the progress being made on two recommendations linked to the EC’s December 2012 action plan against tax evasion.
The first foresees a strong EU stance against tax havens, going beyond current international measures; member states are encouraged to use common criteria to identify havens and place them on national blacklists.
The second recommendation covers aggressive tax planning, setting out ways to block off opportunities exploited by companies to avoid paying tax. They include reinforcing anti-abuse provisions in bilateral tax treaties, national legislation and EU corporate legislation.
The first meeting of the tax governance platform is provisionally planned for 10 June 2013.
