Almost 93% of self assessment (SA) taxpayers submitted their 2011/12 returns on time, as a record number of people avoided a late-filing penalty.
Of the UK’s 10.34 SA taxpayers, 9.61m (92.9%) met the deadline – either on paper by 31 October or online no later than 31 January – while 730,000 fines for tardiness have been incurred.
The busiest day for digital returns was yesterday, when HMRC received 578,000 of the total 7.93m (82.5%) filed. During the busiest hour of 4pm to 5pm, the department logged an average of more than 12 submissions per second.
The taxman’s statistics show more than 45,000 returns were sent on the biggest days of the festive holiday: 1,548 people clicked ‘submit’ on Christmas Day; 4,685 did so on Boxing Day.
New Year’s Eve saw 27,161 celebrate with a completed SA document, and 12,077 were clear-headed enough on New Year’s Day to do the same.
