Paul Aplin OBE of the Institute of Charted Accountants of England & Wales (ICAEW) has been named among the winner of this year's HMRC external engagement awards.
The AC Mole tax partner – the Taxation Awards 2007 personality of the year – heads the ICAEW's technical committee and is a former chairperson of the organisation’s Tax Faculty, to which he was admitted in 1985. He is also a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation.
Aplin (pictured) was honoured by the Revenue for his that has the tax department working closely with professional bodies, tax charities and businesses to improve the end-to-end experience of dealing with the taxman.
The other recipients of HMRC’s gongs, which recognise the contribution made by business, professional and voluntary communities in helping the department run the UK tax system, were Peter MacSwiney of trade representative body ASM UK Ltd and General Electric’s director of global tax policy, Will Morris.
MacSwiney was recognised for his role as trade-side chairman of the Revenue’s joint customs consultative committee, while Morris was praised for championing taxpayer understanding within the tax department, informing debate on large business and tax, and for condemning evasion and abusive arrangements with no commercial purpose.
TaxAid, the charity that provides specialist advice to taxpayers on low incomes, was awarded for innovative thinking and its contribution to improving the taxman’s services for vulnerable individuals.
“HMRC want to make the tax system more transparent,” said Lin Homer, the department’s permanent secretary, adding that the aim can be achieved only by officials working in close partnership with the tax profession and the voluntary sector.
