Having returned from holiday to three unopened copies of Taxation I settled down to flick through them this morning.

Interesting piece on 9 August from HMRC’s Ed Hagger on the quantification of the “tax gap”.

Won’t be long before Richard Murphy has something to say about that I thought. And sure enough there it was just a few moments later in the 23 August issue.

I do not know Ed Hagger and I am sure HMRC can answer for itself but I found the article by Mr Murphy both nasty and self-serving and not worthy of your magazine.

Mr Murphy has long had plenty to say about tax – some of which might even have some merit.

But mostly Mr Murphy has lots to say about himself and how the rest of the world is wrong. Count how many times...
