An HMRC error has led to 12,000 penalty warning letters being sent to taxpayers who have been removed from self assessment (SA).
The department says these individuals should ignore the notice: they will not have to pay a penny, and do not need to complete a return.
Following a Revenue invitation to SA taxpayers to put forward their argument to not be in the system, the department has so far removed around 130,000 individuals, with the agreement that late-filing penalties would be cancelled.
The taxman is are writing to apologise to those affected by the mistake. An spokesperson said, ‘We have identified that nearly 12,000 people have been sent a self-assessment daily penalty letter in error. We are very sorry and can reassure these customers [sic] that we know who they are and that this letter is incorrect: they do not owe a penalty.
'We can reassure these customers [sic] that they have been removed from self assessment.’
