A contractor is working away from his office base and is incurring costs of train fares and parking at the station. Is it possible to reclaim the VAT on parking charges without a valid receipt?

Thinking about recent train fare increases has brought to mind a question on the cost of parking at my local railway station. I am a consultant working through my own limited company and am currently carrying out work for a client in London requiring regular travel to their premises in the city.

If I buy a monthly train ticket and a monthly parking ticket and I ask for a receipt I don’t get a VAT receipt. I have therefore been purchasing my parking tickets separately from the company that runs the car park at my local station because they do issue a VAT invoice.

However the downside is that their longest ticket period is weekly so I cannot take advantage of the discount offered by buying a monthly parking ticket from the train company.
