A new client in the solar panel installation business has taken on some sales representatives. The client pays the representatives purely on a commission basis, but also provides computers and mobile phones

I have a new client who is seeking to establish a business in the apparently booming sector of domestic solar panels fixed to residential properties and feeding into the grid.

He has had some success as a sole trader working on his own but has recruited half-a-dozen sales representatives to follow up leads and sell products etc.

So far he has used a separate building firm to install the units on properties.

My concern is over the sales reps. My client tells me that they are self-employed although as I understand it they are not working for anyone else.

Basically it seems that he has found some previously unemployed people and has agreed that he will pay them a mileage allowance to cover their costs from their homes to the homes of potential customers.
