HMRC have deployed approximately 31,000 staff across all grades at
31 March 2010 on a variety of compliance activities including risk assessment, addressing inaccurate returns, verifying repayment claims, debt collection as well as criminal investigations across all heads of duty.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer estimates that there will be approximately 29,000 compliance staff by 31 March 2011, with HMRC expecting to find resource savings of 15% through the improved technology, greater efficiency and better IT contracts.
Additionally, HMRC are currently said to be working on business plans including a new team crackdown on offshore tax evasion and additional criminal investigations to increase the number of criminal prosecutions, all of which are expected to be published in spring 2011.
