With the self assessment deadline for filing paper returns approaches, HMRC have launched three new online toolkits aimed at helping agents avoid common errors when filing clients’ tax returns.
The free, downloadable offerings are designed for ease of use and cover VAT input tax, inheritance tax, and expenses and benefits from employment. They follow the release earlier this year of six toolkits – concerning capital gains tax for land and buildings, personal and private expenditure, trusts and estates, CGT for trust and estates, marginal small company relief, and capital allowances for plant machinery – that were downloaded more than 21,000 times in the first three months of their publication.
The Revenue is eager to increase the proportion of paper returns that are filed by the 30 October deadline. Of the 2,467,421 submitted for the previous tax year, around 87% (2,143,753) were on time, according to Revenue figures. The department has called on agents to help boost the percentage of timely returns for the 2009/10 tax year.
