I read the replies to Readers’ Forum query 17,607, Facility face-off, with a mounting sense of disbelief. It is said that a client made incorrect tax returns over a prolonged period.
When the offshore disclosure facility was announced, he took advantage of it, wiped the slate clean and paid a penalty, which was substantially less than he would otherwise have expected to pay.
He is now complaining because, if he had waited, he could have got away with paying even less.
Such a degree of chutzpah reminds me of the trial of the person accused of murdering his parents: on being found guilty, he asked for the court’s sympathy since he was now an orphan.
