Tax agents can now call one telephone number for all queries to HMRC relating to their PAYE and self assessment clients. The new number is 0845 366 7855.
The Revenue has reduced the number of agent-dedicated lines from 12 to one in response to tax advisers saying such a move would make matters simpler when contacting the department. It would remove the need to decide which regional number to call for a particular client.
The aim of the change is that it will provide a quicker service, have shorter recorded announcements, and provide accesses to more experienced staff and greater technical help.
Agents can use the helpline to update or discuss clients’ personal and employment details, personal allowances, expenses, payment notifications, notifications of benefits in kind, other earnings or income amendments to self assessment tax returns. They can also make requests for repayments, reduce payments on account, and arrange for collection of tax payable through a PAYE code.
This service is for authorised agents only. If HMRC cannot verify that the agent is formally sanctioned to speak on a client's behalf, the taxman will not proceed with the call.
There is a separate agent-priority line for matters of tax credits: 0845 300 3943.
