HMRC have completed their final upgrade of the National Insurance and PAYE Service (NPS), which is now being rolled out by the department.
The changes are intended to introduce additional automation to the Revenue’s process of checking the amount of tax paid by an individual for a year. For most taxpayers, NPS will automatically check the amount of tax paid on total income for the year against the allowances and deductions on record.
Where either too much or too little tax has been paid, a calculation will be issued automatically. This is expected to speed up the process of reconciling records at the end of each tax year and reduce clerical involvement.
HMRC say they are taking steps to ensure the data issues that affected some PAYE coding notices earlier in the year will not affect the calculations issued to taxpayers and their agents as a result of reconciling end-of-year pay and tax details.
