I was just in the loft putting away the latest volume of Taxation magazines when I noticed that the shelves on which these are kept were again running out of space.
I opened the oldest volume I could find and was transported back to 3 April 1982 when the magazine cost a mere 55p and the editor was Kenneth Tingley.
My interest aroused I delved further. The editorial by Kenneth was entitled More Midnight Oil and bemoaned the complexity and length of the 1982 Finance Bill that was ‘recorded on 189 closely printed pages’ possibly leading to the longest Finance Act ever issued. The letters page had a query on only or main residence exemption and another on gains on assets situated overseas.
The edition of 15 May 1982 had an editorial on the tax advantages of incorporating a business: a maximum rate of tax of 40% corporation...
