A protocol to the double taxation agreement between the UK and Malaysia has been agreed by the countries' governments.
The document – signed in London by Stephen Timms MP, the financial secretary to the Treasury, and HE Datuk Abd Aziz Mohammed, high commissioner of Malaysia – updates the exchange-of-information article of the existing DTA to bring it into line with current Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development standard and practice, alongside protocols to double tax conventions recently agreed by the UK with countries including Singapore, Luxembourg, Belgium and Mexico.
The text is available on the HMRC website and will shortly be laid as a schedule to a draft order in council for consideration by the House of Commons. It will then also be available from the Stationery Office.
The protocol will enter into force once both countries have completed their legislative procedures. The provisions of will then take effect from the following calendar year.
