The two most shocking figures we have all encountered in recent months relate to the government’s annual public sector deficit (£175 billion and rising) and the transfer fee paid by Real Madrid for Manchester United footballer Cristiano Ronaldo (£80 million).

It is ironic that I was reading about both figures while standing at a bus stop listening to two mature ladies complaining about the price of bread going up by 20p a loaf this year. What a disgrace!

But going back to Ronaldo is there a nice £12 million VAT windfall for...
