The Public Bill Committee began its deliberation on the Finance Bill 2009 on 19 May.

The chairman Peter Atkinson welcomed committee members with the usual instructions about jackets (they may be removed) pagers (ensure they are switched off) and red boxes (keep papers in them and return them to the cupboard after each meeting).

He was in turn welcomed by spokesmen for the main parties and debate of clause 1 ‘charges and main rates for 2009/10’ began.
