It’s snowing outside, the weather forecast is grim and the economic forecast is even worse but I have found something to bring a smile to my face in Taxation, 22 January 2009.
To be precise, it is the news item on self assessment and the efforts that HMRC are making to ensure agent authorisation is dealt with quickly.
The item states that ‘according to HMRC, the turnaround for SA authorisations is currently one day’.
I am reminded of a 64-8 form that I sent to HMRC in July 2007 and, despite my best efforts, I still had not received the UTR by January 2009.
The submission of a paper return to my local tax office, along with a letter daring them not to process it eventually produced the usual letter of apology for the lapse of service along with the elusive UTR.
