Hugh Mainprice who passed away recently was a doyen of the VAT profession writes John Newth.

Indeed he was one of the triumvirate who drew up the UK’s VAT legislation in the early 1970s.

His book Value Added Tax published by Butterworths in 1978 was a standard ‘bible’ regarding the tax at the time.

Over the years he also contributed to many books journals and magazines as well as speaking at conferences and representing clients at VAT tribunals. He contributed a chapter on VAT to Butterworths (now Tottels) Investigations Looseleaf Service.

Hugh was a Bachelor of Laws solicitor and fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation.

Like many in the tax and VAT professions he ‘changed sides’ and in more recent years practised as Mainprice and Co and latterly Hutchinson Mainprice in West London.
