The award is only the fifth bestowed by the organisation. It was bestowed by the ACCA's president, Richard Aitken-Davies at the associations international assembly in Greenwich, London.
Sir John is a veteran chartered accountant and author of two books on business. He has spent more than 40 years with PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he is currently vice-chairman of the company's UK advisory panel.
As Lord Mayor of London in 2006, he championed business education and professional skills.
Richard Aitken-Davies praised Sir John's 'illustrious career' and added that he is 'deservedly regarded as one of the most prominent leaders of the accounting profession'.
Sir John remarked that he admires 'what ACCA has achieved over the years, developing its business overseas as well as in the UK. The emerging markets have benefited from the training and qualifications given to students'.
