HMRC have been busy revamping their powers in the last few months with several consultation documents and proposed new legislation in this year's Finance Bill (see Part 7).

While it will take time for these new powers to bed in there is no reason to suppose that investigations will not carry on as normal with the attendant hours of work and disruption they often bring.

Much publicity has been given to the relationship between HMRC and advisers. There is an awareness in the upper echelons of power that the relationship could be better and that steps should be taken to improve matters but in general...
