But it will be business as usual for the Exmouth-based tax software firm

Award-winning tax and accounting software company Digita has been acquired by Thomson Corporation, a global provider of information software.

Digita managing director Jerry Rihll, who co-founded the company 21 years ago with senior executive Roger Thomas, said he was 'delighted to be joining forces with Thomson'.

In a letter to customers, Mr Rihll said Digita had been thinking deeply about succession and, while many organisations had approached the company, they 'simply didn't share our vision or values'.

He went on to say Digita felt 'truly honoured that Thomson can see the potential in Digita and want to support us as we take our business to the next level'.

The president and COO of Thomson International Legal & Regulatory, Helen Owers, remarked that Digita's suite of software products had 'tremendous appeal and brand loyalty across the accountancy profession'.

She added: 'Digita's position has been built on investment in customer service and product development, and that is a culture that we are committed to in the future.

'We will continue to invest in Digita's product development.'

The acquisition - for an undisclosed sum - builds on Thomson's recent purchase of PowerTax in Australia, as well as its tax and accounting software and services portfolio in North America.

Jerry Rihll said it will be 'business as usual at Digita', and he will continue in his current role as MD.

The company will continue to be based at its Exmouth headquarters with the same employees. However, Roger Thomas will be stepping down from day-to-day operations.

Digita won the Best Tax Software category in the Taxation Awards in 2007, 2006 and 2003, and has been shortlisted for this year's prize, the winner of which will be announced on 22 May.
