SPEAKERS:

  • Andrew Burgess: tax lecturer with Mercia
  • Mark Morton: head of tax at Mercia

The conference concentrated on tax enquiries for individuals and employer compliance reviews and looked specifically at penalties.

Who controls the enquiry?

Andrew Burgess drew on his long experience in tax enquiry work to explain that running a successful enquiry is all about control.
The adviser needs to have control of the client paperwork and timetable.

To control the client you need to win his complete confidence and co-operation so he doesn't spring surprises in front of the Inspector.

Control the paperwork by running a correspondence file alongside the working file and record everything that is said in meetings or phone calls.

Control the timetable by setting realistic deadlines and chasing the Inspector if he doesn't respond.
