We have been unable to ascertain the exact reason for the failure of online filing on 31 January

Now that the dust is starting to settle on 'the great tax crash' of 31 January as The Times described it Taxation is trying to ascertain the reasons for the failure of HMRC's self assessment online filing service its effects and the lessons that can be learned.

We have been unable to ascertain the exact reason for the failure of online filing on 31 January and await HMRC's further comments on this.

A copy of an error message printed from HMRC's website on 31 January is available below as a PDF and if any readers can shed light on possible causes we would be interested in receiving these thoughts.

With regards to its immediate effects HMRC issued the following statement on 31 January.

'HMRC's Self Assessment Online filing service has experienced technical difficulties this morning which has meant that some taxpayers have experienced difficulties filing on-line.
