It's that time of year again! RICHARD CURTIS makes, rethinks and then unmakes a New Year's resolution

Ah the New Year's resolution.

That seasonal note of humanity's eternal optimism in the face of almost inevitable disappointment the triumph of hope over experience.

Yes we've made a resolution every New Year since we can first remember; yes we have failed to keep them probably before the month was out and yes we will be making them again this year.

Whether it's to lose weight reduce our alcohol consumption give up smoking or be more organised at home or work it's almost inevitable that come February they will be a dim and distant memory.

My resolution? Perhaps it should be to stop writing long rambling introductions to articles.

But that said perhaps the long and rambling introduction does serve a purpose; it draws the unsuspecting reader slowly into the article perhaps seducing him or her with a short story...
