E-filing: moving forward

PREET MAJITHIA reports on the results of an e-filing survey into the Carter proposals.

THE 'E-FILING OF Personal Tax Returns Survey' was commissioned by the Working Together E-group to analyse current practice and apprehensions about online filing. In 'Beyond the Deadline' (Taxation 2 November 2006 page 101) Richard Curtis encouraged practitioners to take part in this survey.
The results have now been published and will be used by the E-group which consists of seven professional bodies to work with the HMRC in response to the Carter proposals. Published alongside the March 2006 Budget these are remembered for the controversy generated around the changing of filing deadlines but they also set out guidelines and timetables for the development of e-services for tax.
