MIKE TRUMAN looks at how you should be making decisions about your CPD needs for 2007.

CPD SCHEMES VARY from one professional body to another. Some work on points systems typically asking for around 150 points in a year with three points for an hour of structured CPD such as a lecture and one point for an unstructured hour. Others work more simply on a target of hours but with a mandatory minimum for structured CPD. Finally some schemes (such as the ICAEW one) do not impose a particular target at all but ask members to show evidence of having considered and planned their CPD needs and then having met those plans.
What the differences can sometimes hide is the similar aims and objectives of CPD. Even professional bodies which apply a strict numerical target for CPD will normally use that as a measure of whether you are meeting a more general provision — the need to keep your...
