By late 1941 the United States had entered the war and the Marx Brothers had been disbanded for several months. Groucho was 52 years old and had received divorce papers from his wife Ruth. He had also recently gifted $100 000 to Betty the ex wife of Chico Marx who had blown his share of the fortune that the Marx Brothers had made: 'There were 3 things Chico was always on — a phone a horse or a broad'. Times were tough and he needed cash.
The little book was marketed as an impulse purchase with a sale price of $1. I paid substantially more than that recently for a first edition but had no alternative if I wanted...
