I was interested to read the news item in Taxation, 9 March 2006, regarding the announcement by HMRC of the formation of a 'Tax Evasion Hotline'. I am sure that readers will draw their own conclusions about the sequence of events.
Perhaps because we all disapprove of tax evasion, the professional institutes have meekly accepted this initiative without query. The Tax Evasion Hotline is now displayed boldly on the HMRC website.

What has not been considered however is the consequence of this HMRC initiative. Human nature being what it is false reports will be made by vindictive former spouses/partners jealous neighbours and business competitors.
All of this adds another ingredient to existing 'Snoopers Charters'. One could comment somewhat tongue in cheek that perhaps HMRC should have promised a reward for information about tax...
