I submitted the original query (Taxation 29 September page 732) which evoked the response from 'Persistent' that has so enraged 'Disgusted of Parliament Street' (Taxation 3 November page 130). He makes no reference to the behaviour of the HMRC officer described in my query. This behaviour was surely inexcusable by any standards. It is not a defence of your own behaviour to accuse others of low standards. My suspicion is that HMRC managers are more interested in producing cash than in checking that the spirit of their manuals and instructions have been complied with.
It is sad that 'Disgusted' should show no sympathy for a decent law abiding taxpayer who was on the receiving end of quite blatant intimidation and indeed unlawful demands for money. That this can happen in a civilised society is shameful to the name CIVIL service. This concept belongs...
