You posted a response from 'Persistent' to the above Readers' forum query (Taxation, 29 September, page 732) that said 'It is well known that PAYE audit staff and Schedule E compliance officers can operate in a cavalier manner, and do not necessarily consider accepted law and practice in the conduct of their activities'.
I have to say that I am surprised that you published such an inflammatory and grossly inaccurate comment that is almost libellous in its content.

For a start the 'PAYE audit staff and Schedule E compliance officers' have not actually existed since 1995 at the latest as the two tasks were combined to create the Employer Compliance business units. Secondly all Employer Compliance officers are required to complete their tasks under rules laid down in the Employer Compliance Handbook Enquiry Handbook and other...
