Dawn Primarolo said that more than 1.6 million tax returns were received electronically, i.e. using the electronic lodgement service or online filing service, for the tax year 2003-04.
With regard to a question concerning enquiries, Ms Primarolo said that since 1997 the Revenue had undertaken approximately 2,600 random enquiries into the tax returns of self-employed individuals and 250 random enquiries into the tax returns of small businesses each year. In the tax years 1997-98 and 1998-99, adjustments were made to the returns in 32% and 30% respectively of all random enquiries.
