Too much credit

A survey of the members of the charity One Parent Families and its helpline users found that three quarters of those who have to repay overpaid tax credits experienced financial problems as a result. 82% of those who had received overpayments had suffered Inland Revenue administrative mistakes. 28% had received an overpayment in 2003-04 and a further five per cent were awaiting confirmation of an overpayment.
The charity is therefore urging the Government to reduce and cap the rates at which overpayments can be recovered. Currently recipients of maximum child tax credit are subject to a 10% recovery rate if they are overpaid or more if they have been overpaid more than once. Claimants of working tax credits can have their awards reduced by 25% in order to make repayments or more for several overpayments. In some cases there is no limit on...
