Standing on the shoulders …
Round the outside of the £2 coin there is a quote from a letter written by Sir Isaac Newton to Robert Hooke in 1576, saying that Newton had only managed to achieve so much in science because he was 'standing on the shoulders of giants' — the scientists that had preceded him.

I've spent my entire working life, 25 years so far, in tax. During that time there have only ever been three permanent editors of Taxation, and if I'd started a couple of years later it would only have been two. Kenneth Tingley was just coming to the end of his long tenure, Simon Owen took over from him, and of course Malcolm Gunn has spent the last eighteen years building Taxation into the magazine it is today.
I have inherited what he and the editors before him have built — a magazine that is essential reading for all tax practitioners and the leading authority in its field. I've also inherited a great team who, with John Newth's expert and experienced help as consulting editor since Malcolm's departure, have ensured that the magazine has continued to comment and inform as authoritatively as ever. Anything I achieve over the coming years will only be because I am standing on the shoulders of giants.
