Lost returns

I was interested to read Mike Down's item in Taxation, 9 May 2002 at page 163 on lost tax returns. I too have come across these letters — one arrived in the post on the same day as the repayment arising from the apparently mislaid return!

I was interested to read Mike Down's item in Taxation 9 May 2002 at page 163 on lost tax returns. I too have come across these letters — one arrived in the post on the same day as the repayment arising from the apparently mislaid return!

One colleague who was sent such a letter in respect of his own personal return was advised that these letters were semi-automatically generated in some districts whenever a return had not been captured within twelve weeks of receipt. It did not seem to occur to the districts involved to check the piles of outstanding returns before issuing the letter!

Anecdotal evidence also suggests that many of these letters have been sent by districts to which taxpayers' affairs have recently moved (whereas the tax return itself was sent to a previous...
