I agree with the comments in Taxation 15 February 2001 ('Starting at the Deep End' pages 453 to 455).

Every time I try to work through sections 1 1A and 1B Taxes Act 1988 to see if I have correctly remembered what rates of tax apply to different types of income I despair.

I spend ages going down different passages of the labyrinth before emerging in the open only to find as likely as not that I am on an island that the tide is about to engulf.

You have articulated the problem in a masterful way and uncovered more problems than I was aware of.

I have to take issue with you however when you say that foreign dividends assessed on the remittance basis attract a top rate of tax of 40 per cent rather than 32.5 per...
