Recently we have received six communications from the Contributions Office in Class 4 deferment cases, indicating that no Class 1 contributions have been paid by the contributors concerned for 1997-98, whereas in fact in all cases maximum Class 1 contributions had been paid. The submission of a copy of form P60 for the appropriate year has enabled the records to be corrected.

However it has seemed to us an extraordinary coincidence that each of the contributors concerned has been employed with the Health Service and we now understand that the problem is widespread in that sector for 1997-98.
There may be many employees who pay only Class 1 contributions whose records are inaccurate and will presently have no way of knowing this. Advisers of employees in the Health Service may wish to consider therefore whether it would be appropriate to check the position with regard to National...
