A husband and wife went to live in the USA as a result of the wife’s secondment there. After seven years in that job, they spent a further seven years in the USA and are planning to return to the UK next year

Our clients a husband and wife have a London property which has been let for the past 14 years while they have lived in the USA. The reason for the move was the wife’s secondment with her job at the Ministry of Defence (MoD) which lasted for the first seven years.

The last seven years were spent working and travelling in the States and this will continue for another year at which point they will draw their UK pensions and return to London permanently. They have been non-resident in the UK throughout the period concerned.

The let UK property has increased significantly in value from purchase price 21 years ago (£80 000) to more than £600 000 today although a fair amount of expense will be required to restore the condition owing to various tenants’ wear and tear. Afterwards...
